Sign up to support the Co-operative Housing Tenure Bill
As we outline here, this week Labour & Co-operative MP Jonathan Reynolds is introducing a Co-operative Party initiated parliamentary bill to end the essentially feudal nature of England’s land ownership laws and create a new form of tenure, Co-operative Housing Tenure. David Rodgers of CDS Co-ops explains why this change is so necessary over on Left Foot Forward.
We need your help to ensure that the Coalition Government supports this change, to maintain the momentum and keep housing co-ops at the top of their agenda. Please sign the petition below and tweet your support:
We, the undersigned, want the DCLG to commit to supporting this change to housing law, to create a Co-operative Housing Tenure.

I am a Cllr on the housing management forum, at a branch meeting I gave a presentation on the changes that will affect tenants from the changes to tenancy agreements and the financial settlement. We will know more in the newyear. It was decided at a branch that I would write to the coop newsletter re this issue. There is a need to modernise the housing strategy for the benefit of all.
Frances Rehal,
I support this change

If there was ever a time when Co-operative Housing Schemes were most needed then that time has now arrived. I wish Jonathan Reynolds MP all the best in getting his Bill through.. and hopefully onto the Statute Books.

Jean Jeffery,

Everyone has the right to a roof over thier head and the ability to obtaiin affordable housing at this time is almost impossible so I fully support this initiative.

If ever a time when Co-operative Housing Schemes were most needed then now is the time. I sincerely hope Jonathan Reynolds MP succeeds with his Bill and has cross party support for it. This fundamental change would benefit so many people.

I would like to give my support to this bill and I will pass this around to everyone of my friends as Im sure they are also interested in freeing themselves of the tyranny of serfdom and find reasonably priced housing. especially as the conservatives sold all the council houses off that were paid for by tax payers money. Now all those houses are in the hand of private landlords. We need land that can be built on by cooperatives or contractors for the provision of permanent or temporary homes. I say temporary as this could include room for travelling communities or portable buildings. This bill must go through. If you could point me the direction of finding a plot of land to place my portable home I would be very grateful. Thanks you. Robert Payne
john harrington,
the first housing co-ops started 160 years ago in UK, A legal framework for all Co-operatives, including Housing Co-ops is long overdue.

At last a long overdue and essential step forward if we are to really tackle homelessness in this country. Housing Associations - excellent though many of them are - have ceased to be the driving force of change that is required to move onto the next stage of evolution from the discriminatory past in the provision of acceptable housing. We owe it to our children and future generations!

This is very important and more forceful attention should be paid to unoccupied houses/homes especially those owned by 'social' landlords
Ann Davidson,
David Dickman,
Nichola Plant,
Geoff Scargill,
Housing is now an urgent problem. Many people cannot now even afford to rent property, particularly in London. Mortgages are out of reach for many.
Nick Money,
Bob Harvey,
This idea is REAL Big Society and Localism. Is David Cameron serious? Just building more houses for developers' profit is unhelpful - the developers for Sherford New Town are now insisting that the proportion of affordable houses is reduced from 50% to 25% - how does this help?!
Chris Hart,
Robin Yates,
Ian Draper,
Jean Cromar,
Paul Mountain,
The scaling up of cooperative and mutual housing can and must play a critical role in the solving of our housing crisis, through the provision of good quality sustainable housing to all in need of it. David Rodgers and CDS Cooperatives have done inspiring work in promoting it and I wish this bill every success.
Ann Denise Lanes,
Housing cooperatives and cooperative land tenure can only improve social, financial and environmental outcomes for new households, as well as enabling existing householders who wish to create more sustainable communities
Andrew Dundas,
We also need to (1) adjust planning law to enable more sites to be made available, and (2) provide down-sizing homes for the growing numbers of small households.
Jo Storie,

Christopher Hall,
We need more co-operative-based housing!
seamus williams,
John MacSomhairle,
It is high time that housing co-ops were recognised. As someone who works for one, I have been continually frustrated by successive governments inability to recognise that we are different from other registered social landlords.
geof atwell,
We need a serious change in housing policy to address many of our current and worsening problems.
Bill Whalen,
An important step in the right direction. but we need also to tackle the crutial and most basic problem of fiancial inequality in society.
Laurie Martin,
Graeme Kemp,
ian grady,
everyone deserves access to a home and with affordable rents ,and with private rents and availability of homes from social landlords ,this initiative is essential will be help now and for securty of tenure in future

Thanks for trying Mike. Others seem to not be having a problem so please try again, but we will test the system again in the meantime.
unequal distribution of wealth is one of the greatest causes of injustice in this country. This Bill will go some way to retrieve the situation
Supporting this Bill will improve tenure for all and ensure future generations have the option and the ability to get onto the housing ladder fairly and co-operatively.
I will be supporting you.
So important to look for practical ethical alternatives to market greed. Many thanks.
Private landlords should relinquish ownership of empty houses after a precribed period , likewise all land with planning permission but no buildings.
we are competent and we need to be able to manage ourselves whether we live in individual flats and houses or in co-operative or other communal and shared arrangements.
Housing co-operatives started over 160 years ago in the UK. All Co-ops including Housing Co-ops should have their own legislation. In the same way that companies do.
Having been around for 90 years its about time the Co-op Party actually achieved this.
In Japan the government introduced Co-op legislation in 1920, may be that,s why the two largest Co-ops in the world are Japanese Financial Co-ops and they have very successful retail, farming, fishermen, health and university Co-ops
